So, you just landed yourself the job of your choice; one with a reasonably good starting pay, great employee benefits, a seemingly understanding boss, friendly colleagues, and hello.. you just noticed someone really cute working next door!

Some of you are probably dreading the work wear because it means you can no longer wear your never-been-washed jeans with your faded Metallica T-shirt or your cute comfy spaghetti tops. But getting dressed for the office doesn’t mean bidding farewell to your personal style. Read on to find out what styles will bring you to the board room and styles which will send you to the HR room. (gasp!)

First things first, find out the dress code in your company. Every company would have one, and it differs from one industry to another. If you’re in banking or IT industry, there is a more stringent dress code as opposed to advertising, media or publishing, their employees would have more freedom to choose what they wear to work. Do find out if there is a casual Friday too.

If your company doesn’t have a specific guideline, then look around you. The best clues to figuring out your company dress code is to look at what your colleagues are wearing, or better yet, look at what your boss is wearing.

Once you have ascertained that, these are a few pointers to guide you to looking polished and professional:

Colours – Start with more conventional career colours such as red (aggressive), gray (conservative), navy (trustworthy), white (professional) and black (chic/suave) which is the most versatile colour of all.

Prints – Stay away from loud prints, unless you’re in a creative line, but checks, houndtooth prints, stripes are safe to wear in the office.

Accessories – Girls must be cautious to not over accessorize themselves, especially with chunky, dangly jewelry. For guys, cufflinks are a great way to make your tie & shirt outfit even more professional. Adding a tie clip would also take the look to a different level. Make sure your shoes are appropriate with your outfit.

Personal grooming – Make sure your overall grooming is in top condition. Nails are kept short and manicured. Hair is always in place. If you are into colouring your hair, make sure your stylist choose a suitable colour for both work and play. No, dyeing your hair blue or pink, unless you’re a hair stylist of course.

Fit – If your job requires you to be in shirts and tailored suits most of the time, make sure that they are the perfect fit. Nothing is worse than you swimming in an oversized jacket or look like you’re about to pop out of your shirt.

Now that you know what to wear to work, you should also know what NOT to wear. It is vital that you do not commit career suicide by wearing these:

Overly casual – Caps, sneakers, shorts are a big no no unless you’re participating in your company’s annual marathon. Jeans are usually acceptable for most companies on ‘casual Fridays’, but make sure it is dark washed and not torn or frayed at the hems.

Overly sloppy – Again, fit is important for a more polished look. No baggy clothes. Guys, keep shirts neatly tucked into your pants, and wear a belt over if your pants are loose. Make sure your clothes are ironed and suits are brushed for stray hair, animal fur or lint.

Overly sexy – Do not bring your ‘fun’ clothes to work. Girls, halter necks, tube tops, miniskirts and stiletto heels should be kept for after work hours. Keep necklines and hemlines appropriate. Guys, don’t try to pull of a Rambo by baring too much of your chest. Button up your shirts!

Whatever profession you are in, it is always important to look polished and professional as it will project a positive image of you as a confident, reliable and competent worker. Nevertheless, it is also important to let your personality shine through. Do not be afraid to show a little of you through what you wear to work.

Ok, now that you have the ultimate career wardrobe, you can ‘power dress’ your way up the career ladder!
