It’s 9.05am and you’ve already got a Mt Everest of work papers on your desk. You have a vivid flashback of your manager’s bulldog face telling you that he needs it done by today. The phone is ringing off the hook thanks to persistent clients.
And to add a finishing touch to the stressful ambience, the office busybody who laughs like a turkey cackling is flirting disgustingly with the photocopy guy right next to your cubicle.
STRESSED? Well, rather than rip the hair off from your scalp, take note of these useful stress-busting tips!

Move it, move it! When you’re stressed, muscles get tensed easily. Crouching over your computer with a scowl on your face isn’t going to help. So why not put your muscles to better use: Move them! Try quick, exaggerated shrugs.
Or if your cubicle is comfortably hidden from the view of others, droop like a willow or do jumping jacks. The key is to get physically moving. So even walking to the pantry will be a great way to ease the stress too!

[Breathe in, breathe out] X 3 In stressful times, the flow of oxygen to the body is decreased. This creates great discomfort, especially if you continue to stress yourself out.
Well, at times like this, practice Darth Vader’s technique: Deep breathing. Inhale through your nose by taking slow deep breaths, hold your breath for about 2 seconds and then slowly exhale through the mouth. And you wonder why Darth Vader looks cool and collected all the time!

Be your own DJ Spin your favourite music when you’re stressed out! Or songs that are motivating or define relaxing to you. Music has a great impact on the mind. It helps to distract your thoughts away from the stress and before you know it, work will be as smooth as the moon walk!

Hold the position of Time Manager Start the day early or on time. DON’T procrastinate. Taking a break is fine, but make sure you’re not doing it to avoid or put off work. It will be effective to plan and write out what needs to be done first.
At least then, as you complete your tasks, you can see the amount of work that’s being cleared off and that serves as a form of motivation to quickly complete the rest.

Make lunch hour, Happy Hour Minus the alcohol, that is. Lunch time is a time to chill-out after working hard for first half of the day. Pick a place you find comfortable to eat.
If your lunch partners are gossip queens or complain kings, eat with other easy-going colleagues instead. You shouldn’t have to endure more stress during your time to relax.

If necessary, quit. Doing something you don’t enjoy is really not an enjoyable thing. This is a sure way to feel stressed out and tired, easily and frequently. If you really dislike your job and its scope, do something about it. Talk to your superior to see if it’s possible to change to a department you prefer working in.
Or start seeking for a new job – one that you’ll be happy working in. Remember, happy people are productive workers! | |
